Let me just start off by saying this: James
Horner… you are the man!
(Look
at him! Bless his genius musical score writing cotton socks!)
For those of you who don’t know who James
is, he is the guy behind basically all of your favourite movie soundtracks. His
awesome self has composed all the music and has been the one conducting the
music for movies like Avatar (obviously), Titanic, The Karate Kid, Casper the Friendly
Ghost, Jumanji- I could seriously keep going on and on.
In terms of his work in Avatar (2009)- boy,
he definitely didn’t disappoint! I have to admit that I may or may not have
fallen asleep when I first watched the movie… BUT! I can safely say that in the
parts that I was awake for I absolutely loved the soundtrack! So much so, I even
went online and listened to most of the soundtrack and was happily content with
what I was listening to.
The reason
why I love the Avatar soundtrack so much is because Horner has composed
each ‘song’ (for lack of a better word) in
a way that really portrays what’s happening on screen. The way he has done this
allows the viewer to have an understanding about the tone and mood of the film
at that certain point in time as well as providing the audience with a way to
try to understand what the music is trying to indicate about what’s going to
happen next.
In simple and non-Micayla-like terms, James
Horner has excellently demonstrated how having shrill noises and lots of ‘booms’
and loud sounds can indicate the death of a main character (SPOILER ALERT) during
battle as well as how the sweet sounding melodies and fairy/fantasy like sounds
can indicate the happy ending that the Na’vi people deserve.
I could go into heaps of detail about the
hella cool way the sound effects were created but that would need a whole other
day to be able to go on about the technicalities.
All in all, I really liked this soundtrack
and would highly recommend for people to watch the movie just so they can
understand how great James Horner’s composing skills are and what I just
babbled on about for the past couple of hundred words!
